Simply Not For Me December 27, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying this is not an in depth technical review but one of personal experience that may help you decide before you buy.
I received a Wii for Christmas from my father. I was a little disappointed as I had a feeling it might not be for me. However, I was determined to give it a fair go.
Unlike the fan boys I don't pledge my allegiance to ANY console other than what's right for me or what works best for any given game. I've been playing games for the past 20 years all the way back to the Spectrum, Amiga, PS one, Xbox, PS2, PC etc. etc.
The 3 things I look for in a games console are great graphics, great games and intuitive controls. My personal view is that the Wii fails to deliver on all three. The games were too simplistic as were the graphics and my personal experience was that the control system was both unresponsive and inaccurate.
All in all I found the whole thing to be an incredibly frustrating and lack lustre experience. The truth is I felt guilty that my dad had spent so much money on the thing. If I had paid that much I would have been livid!
To address the fun factor - I didn't have any! I'm sure if you had a house full of inexperienced gamers that you could have a laugh at grandma flailing around like an idiot on Christmas morning but this novelty would soon wear off.
I have to say that I prefer playing games on my own so this may be a contributing factor to my poor experience. I rarely enjoy playing online games either so I would take this into consideration also.
If you're serious about gaming I feel it's got to be between the Xbox 360, PS3 or PC - whichever suits your own personal playing style and has the type of games you are looking for.
The Wii is simply not for me and I urge you to think seriously about the type of game play you personally like before buying this console.
a console for the whole family December 26, 2008 Everything that can be said about the Wii has probably been covered in other reviews. But it's worth repeating that the Wii is probably the easiest and most intuitive console machine to play and this means it is fun for everyone; not just teenage boys. Our most universally popular purchase this Christmas. When a 12 year old can play it with her grandma and both are having fun, you know you have found something quite special.
best console for family fun December 25, 2008 I bought this product for the holidays and took it to the extended family gathering. The sports DVD it came with is great to get you started. It's been great fun with everyone in the family, the young and the not so young, wanting to play even though the others have had PS2s for a while now. Now the whole family even has Miis. Just make sure to buy a component cable for improved graphics and if you have the space, a second controller for example to play Tennis against each other rather than against the console.
Very easy to setup. Vey easy to play because you use the controller as your gaming equipment (swing the controller as your baseball bat for example). Beats pushing joysticks. Defintely futuristic, a bit like touchscreen vs keypad if you know what I mean. Someday all consoles will have controllers like this.
My wife is still skpetical being a more of a hardcore gamer with her PC games. I've bought her Harry potter to try and win her over. My little girl on the other hand loves her Mii and the fact that people are moving around excitedly rather than sitting on the couch.
excellent December 25, 2008 i recieved this wii for christmas as a present and it arrived on time and in a excellent condition. This is the best present i've ever had. I've played it all morning and think i've burnt the calories off from the mince pies!!!!!! It's a must buy
