Great but not the greatest. December 25, 2008 I'm a big Oasis fan, and I really like this album, but like others have said, it's not quite a 5* album.
I do agree with the comment made by another reviewer, Mani, about (Get Off Your) High Horse Lady, whereby it sounds like a rip off of Give Peace A Chance in the intro and then sounds like a copy of Hi Heel Sneakers in its instrumental composition. However, Paul McCartney said (at a press thing in 1997 in Bishopsgate for the Flaming Pie album), "If they're going to be derivative, it might as well be of us" (Us being The Beatles). He and I both mean this in a good way; I love both bands, as does Macca!
I especially love The Shock Of The Lightning, but that's because of the memories I have of ripping it up to that song at one of their recent live shows.
Overall, the album is great, as I have already said, and certainly deserves 4* but does not quite reach the dizzy heights of Definitely Maybe, What's The Story Morning Glory and The Masterplan for me. Still, it's great to have the boys back in business.
One of the best. December 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Imagine that Oasis are not 14 years old and never wrote their first two albums. Then listen to this and I dare you to dislike it. From the outset, this record is the most Beatles inspired album to date. Now, we all know that that's what Oasis are about, and in my view, there are worse bands to hear through modern ears. Everybody raves about Oasis using the Beatles. So what. That may be one of the things that make them a pleasure to listen too and grow up to. This album follows the thread of Heathen Chemistry and Don't Believe the Truth. Completely different from their predecessors. Somewhat heavier and very complex. If I was to pick a "best" tune, I couldn't. Seriously. They are all good in their own way. Lots of different instruments but at the same time very minimal. Rarely can you hear more than 1 guitar at the same time. I see that "(Get off Your) High Horse Lady" is not being well received. I love it. I bet nobody can listen to this track and concentrate on, say, reading a book. I think it's fantastic. Very different. I like the "Give Peace a Chance" feeling. The following track Falling Down is amazing, possibly one of the best tunes Noel sings on. Personally, I love this album. Oasis have changed tack some over the last few years, and as a lifelong fan, I like the direction. Noel reckons they are going to change tack again with their next album which should be good. Like I said at the start. Put the first 3 albums out of your mind, forget about the "ripping off the Beatles" and just listen to it with an open mind. Fantastic!!!!
Not Oasis, but still Oasis December 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First things first. This is not a rival for Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory. It will never define the time we're in now. People will not be singing along to these songs at closing time in ten years time.
That said, this is a very good album, especially Noel's tracks, which show a definite maturity. Definitely Mature could have been the album title. It would have sucked, but it would make for a good description. Bag It Up, The Turning, Waiting for the Rapture, High Horse Lady and Falling Down are all big steps forward for Noel Gallagher the songwriter. They're obviously Oasis due to the brothers' distinctive voices, but not in the sense that you've heard it all before.
Lead single the Shock of the Lightning is Noel at his lazy best. Not his best - for his best gave us Don't Look Back in Anger, Rock 'n' Roll Star and the Masterplan - but his 'lazy' best...i.e. the kind of songwriting mood that results in a Lyla or a Columbia - not many chords, but catchy and instant. And it's a grower too. Listen to it ten times and tell me you don't like it more than the first time.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon of critical review, but the non-Noel written songs just don't make the same impression.
Liam contributes I'm Outta Time (the second single) which will either tug at the heart strings or make you feel sick, depending on your affinity to John Lennon songs. He also gives us Nothing on Me (it'll stick in your head to an extent, but it doesn't stand out) and Soldier On (a bit of a plodder, but again, not bad). Andy and Gem throw the Nature of Reality and To Be Where There's Life into the mix, and althought the latter has a catchy baseline, neither is as good as Turn Up the Sun or A Bell Will Ring from the last album.
Oasis have made a very good album. It would have been even better if Noel had written all the songs. And better still if Liam could actually sing them live.
AWESOME! BACK TO THEIR BEST December 7, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Great album and a must-buy, back to sounding like their original sounds and their best album since the original hits in 90's :)
Is this as bad as it gets?!? November 29, 2008 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I once heard an interview where Noel Gallagher proclaimed that Oasis, in his opinion, were in the top 3 of bands of all time. On this, and several other albums worth of evidence, it is quite clear that they aren't anywhere near the top 3 of Manchester bands! to say this album is a bit 'samey' is a 'massive' understatement! I was going to re-name them status quoasis, but that would be a great insult to status quo! I would advise anyone to borrow this album before buying, I wish I had, i'd be 8.99 better off now!!
