SO, what exactly is a Balti? September 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A timely follow-up to Deseparately Seeking Paradise, Ziauddin Sardar's Balti Britain takes the reader on an amazing tour of knowledge and self-discovery. His self-identity unfolds through personal history, connecting him to a web of identities that the defines the 'I' in Asianess. He soon finds out that he is more than what he has been defined as and what other people have defined him as. Like most of Zia's books, it is punctuated with perfectly timed sarcasm and humour, but also there remains a steady tone of seriouness and dedication to discovering who he and indeed, most Asians in Britain are. He has a keen eye for dissecting History, and showing us how it realtes to our own histories, showing us things that have always been there but never acknowledged as we learn from his noble nana that 'all knowledge is accompanied by ignorance'.
This book is a must for every Asian who lives in Britain and beyond! It is also essential reading for every politician, every ignorant MP and insensitive policy maker.
After you've finished reading the book, i promise you that a sense of enlightenment shall pervade thy soul!!
