1 out of 5 stars a useless mess   July 27, 2007
5 out of 10 found this review helpful

"Wort fuer Wort" (4th edition) is a rather useless catch-all mess. Each chapter is divided in shorter bilingual sections which include a mishmash of arbitrarily selected words and phrases or even complete sentences (as if language was about parroting).

A number of those words and expressions could actually stand in several sections. Why put "terrorist attacks have an appreciable influence" in the section on "Tourism" rather than in the chapter on politics or economy, for instance? Why list "virus" and "influenza " in the "physical illnesses" section but not "microbe", "measles" or "cancer" for instance? ("Cancer" is in the section entitled "dying", together with... "pneumonia" and "high blood pressure"! ). The section on physical illnesses also includes the astonishing "bring to light, detect" (in German : "entdecken", which actually means "discover" in general). For some reason, "worthless" stands in the chapter on the media.

The absence of an index makes it virtually impossible for the reader to know exactly where to find most of the words and expressions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for AS and A2 German   May 24, 2007

This book helped me through my AS German and currently through my A2.

It gives helpful and useful little connective phrases, whole phrases and helps give a wider range of lexis, which is what the examiners want.

Great book.

5 out of 5 stars A gem!   March 19, 2007

I bought this book upon the recommendation of my AS level German teacher, and have cherished it since. It is packed full of useful vocabulary for A level topics, and the non-topic specific lists at the beginning of the book is a gem when you want to write essays or if you want to spice up your speaking. A must have for a German student of any age!

4 out of 5 stars Handy enuf!   January 24, 2006

This book is sorted by theme which makes it very easy to find whay you're looking for. There's not much in it though - it's only a thin book! Though it's good for quick referencing. Perhaps more suitable for A-level and below.

5 out of 5 stars Essential!   May 20, 2004

Having used Palabra por Palabra and Mot a Mot at A-Level I made sure I got a copy for myself to take to uniersity - I now own the German version Wort fur Wort too! The vocab is linked by theme, ideal for essay writing, conversation or interpreting preparation. I find the chapter with all those essential essay expressions is used in all my written assignments!
